A documentary film about real-life heroes whose everyday job has the possibility to take away someone else's life, without a chance to react. This film presents the deep trauma and bitter sense of guilt that Serbian train-engine drivers face after accidental deaths and suicide jumpers.
In Serbia on average around 60 to 70 persons are killed by trains every year. This
number is similar to the statistics for the whole of Former Yugoslavia, but the rail
tracks in Serbia are many times shorter than in Yugoslavia. The greatest numbers
of casualties are suicides or accidents due to negligence. Most of the victims were
responsible for their own deaths. Sometimes whole families jump onto the tracks
under trains or even groups of people travel ling in road vehicles are caught up in the
accidents. The structure of this film, which was conceived to represent the view of the
participant-perpetrators, consists of inter-mixed testimonials, reconstructions of
events among which are those where some of the suicidees have survived the
accidents and also reconstructions of horrifying ones that ended tragically. There
are also testimonies of different witnesses to the accidents, surviving victims and
neuropsyciatrists who testify to their profound traumas. It is these characters, their
courage to face life “afterwards”, that are, in fact, the main theme of the film,
and the film does not circumvent any of the consequences at all, even placing the
protagonists in the role of genuine heroes.
