  1. The Hult Prize is an international case competition that is open to all university and college students from around the world. The 2013 Hult Prize will be themed around the global food crisis.

Nearly 1 Billion people in the World are Hungry, that is over 1 out of every 4 children. Ironically, our global economy produces enough food each year to feed everyone, however more than one-third of the food generated for human consumption continues to be lost or wasted.

The aim of this year’s Hult Prize is to identify and launch start-ups for social good that drive solutions around those key areas, which we believe will have the greatest net impact on the food crisis. Through what has become the world’s largest crowd-sourcing initiative dedicated to solving global social challenges, the Hult Prize seeks ideas and solutions from the world’s best and brightest future business leaders that will cause a step-change in the vicious global poverty cycle.

The Hult Prize is held simultaneously around the world through a multi-tiered, international competition platform. Through a call for applicants, teams will be selected to compete at one of five international cities: Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai and Shanghai. A sixth site will be facilitated virtually, for those participants whose economic means restrict them from attending one of the five physical competitions.

In part two he will be reporting from Asia’s most food insecure district, just across the Chinese border in Nepal’s western hills.

  4. This short film looks at the success of the ‘Organoponico’, a type of urban farm that was implemented in Cuban cities as a result of, and reaction to, the food crisis Cuba experienced in the early 1990s.

The film examines the success of this initiative through the city of Havana, where 90% of the fruit and vegetables eaten by its inhabitants are now grown within the city.

The film aims to show that other cities should embrace and adapt urban farming techniques in order to become more sustainable and self-sufficient. It is very relevant today since more people are becoming interested in urban agriculture due to the recent economic recession.

We hope that those who see this film will use it as ‘food for thought’ and think about action they could take on a personal level as well as advocating these kinds of initiatives to local governments.
