This video was first released in November of 2973. It was made for students at San Jose State University to help them shoot better video. We also made available to several other institutions around Northern California. So much so that several years later I actually had a Chevron pump jockey down near Monterey say that he recognized me from the tape.

If we were to do this project again today, there would be little need for change. Yes, we'd probably recommend using a wireless mic, a better tripod, and newer LED lights.

The forlorn face in the video is that of Jerry Sandy, good friend and bicycle partner. If Jerry were to do it again, you probably wouldn't recognize him for his age and his grey hair. But it would be the same Jerry.

About 1982 Jerry started to work for KGO-TV in San Francisco. He started in the tape room, then bought his way with bagels into the production department. He became a stage manager, then an assistant director, and ultimately a director, when my wife Beverly left.

Jerry used to do his show with about 11 crewmembers, which he managed to keep entertained and sharp. That way the station always got clean shows, error free. In the current age of technology, Jerry now works mostly alone with 10 pre-programmed computers, a producer, a Chyron operator, a prompter operator, a stage manager, and a server (tape) operator.

But Jerry is still Jerry. If you could see him today he has the same wistful smile and the same boyish glee. Thank you Jerry.

One more thing I want to point out: on a Saturday morning in the middle of production on this project, I lost control of my logical and emotional systems, and because I didn’t like the look of my long hair, I got it cut. It wasn’t until I came to work on Monday morning that I realized what I’d done. Oops.

OBTW: This is a revised issue of this program. My able video partner Glen Pensinger took a lot of his time to remove most of the glitches and dropouts that are endemic to old “Quad” recordings. Thanks Glen.
