Paul & Crim
*Paul Heys is now Principal Lecturer (Employability Lead) for Department of Art and Design at Sheffield Institute of Arts, Sheffield Hallam University.
Crim Collective was founded in 2006 by Senior Lecturer Paul Heys and led by Graphic Design graduate Jonathan Lindley was a University based, student cooperative leading national and international design projects. The collective had a pedagogical focus in developing an academic and industry integrated experience, highlighting innovative learning techniques in an attempt to challenge the way art and design related subjects were taught. This offered a series of non-assessable workshop experiences and together with noted industry-led practitioners encouraged a greater understanding of individual and collective, creative practice.
The intent of the collective was to create a positive working environment and promote studio culture, with a reinforcing of student ownership. The collective championed students and staff within the School of Art, Design and Architecture to communicate through adapted principles of design learning, working along side industry and alumni — engaging with a community beyond the course. ‘Crim’ became a support mechanism, encouraging the student to connect with ever-growing global design community, offering the highest level of practice based learning.
To date the Crim are an internationally noted collective that produced work for galleries, bars, fashion boutiques, film and festivals. It also supported national and international educational programmes that celebrated integrated art and design practice.
‘Crim’ was an acronym for the BA(Hons) Creative Imaging subject area underpinning BA(Hons) Advertising Design, BA(Hons) Graphic Design and BA(Hons) Illustration between 1996 — 2008. The name was reviewed and held in respect of the co founders and students who had worked within the collective pre 2009. Between 2009 — 2014 Crim was underwritten by BA(Hons) Communication Design subject area in conjunction with BA(Hons) Graphic Design at the University of Huddersfield.
Crim Collective were funded through the University of Huddersfield, external parties and commissions and were a non-profit collective who support collectivity in design and co-creative engagement in Higher Education.
