Dan Villegas, a director and cinematographer by profession, graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (Communications and Creative Writing Tracks) where he received the Extreme Fellowship Award and the Loyola Schools Awards for the Arts: Screen Arts upon graduation. As a cinematographer, Dan has shot several music videos for bands such as Parokya ni Edgar, Callalily, Sandwich, Spongecola and for artists such as Gary Valenciano and Nikki Gil. Likewise he has also shot corporate videos for clients such as Smart, Globe, Nestle and L’Oreal. For T.V. he has worked as Lighting Director for shows such as “Hush, Hush,” “Precious Hearts Romances: Mana Po”, “Your Song: Beautiful Girl”, “Maalala Mo Kaya” and was also Director of Photography for Project Runway Philippines Season 2.
Dan Villegas made his mark primarily in the independent film industry after receiving the Balanghai Trophy for Best Cinematography twice from the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival for the films “Huling Pasada” and “Mayohan.” His other films include “Numbalikdiwa,” “Padyak,” “Sabungero,” “Forever and A Day,” “UnOfficially Yours” and “Still Life” for which he received nominations for Best Cinematography from The Star Awards for Movies, FAMAS Awards, Golden Screen Awards, Young Critics Circle Awards and the Gawad Urian. Just the same he received a nomination from the Gawad Urian for his work in “Huling Pasada”.
Dan Villegas debuted his directorial film, “Mayohan” at the 2010 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival in which it received awards for Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Musical Score and Best Cinematography. The film was also nominated at the 2011 Star Awards for Movies for Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Musical Score, Best Original Song as well as Best Cinematography and Best Director for Dan Villegas.
