Farah Rahman aka Fariatie works as a video artist in live audiovisual performances, creates experimental films, music video’s and site specific art installations. Working primarily with the associative re-assembling of found footage and found objects. This research started with an investigative experimental documentary questioning why people save objects. It’s a question she still like’s to bring up in a conversation because almost everybody has their own story to tell about a personal artifact. From that point researching and collecting materials from private/public domain archives, digging at flea markets etc became a fascination. Intrigued by other people’s archived memory’s she remixes her own footage, handmade animations and found footage into new narratives. This gives room for new associative interpretations or new meaning of the material. The works are often related to the Eastern filosophy Wabi Sabi, which loosely translated means: Seeing beauty in imperfection. For her, the European Souvenirs project has been profoundly thought-provoking.

“I started thinking much more about my own identity. My ancestors had the courage to travel from India to Surinam and eventually my parents decided to live in the Netherlands.”
