Filmtank is a production company for documentary films and cross-media content based in Hamburg, Berlin and Stuttgart.
We produce high quality, international documentaries for cinema and television, and television documentaries since 2001. Many productions have received international awards. While in the first place the offices in Hamburg and Stuttgart realise international documentary films, the Berlin office focuses on the production of cross-media content. Games, apps, interactive graphic novels and web documentaries, and other interactive media are developed here in addition to movies.
All of our productions have one thing in common: they broaden the horizon. With this background “Tinkertank” was created in cooperation with projectscope (Inga von Staden) and IMF Interactive Media Foundation gGmbH. The summer camp wants to inspire children and young people to tinker and build and uses the creativity of art and media.
Many filmtank productions have received numerous nominations and awards. Filmtank’s latest production “Cesars Grill” was nominated for the Max Ophüls Prize 2013 and “The Venice Syndrome” in the pre-selection for the German Film Prize 2013. “The Woman with the 5 Elephants” also received a nomination for the German Film Award 2011 in the category Best Documentary. The internationally successful production was also nominated for the Grimme Prize and German Documentary Film Prize. The film was awarded with the prestigious PRIX ITALIA 2011. Two years earlier, two productions were also nominated for the Adolf Grimme Prize: The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories and The Way of a Warrior. In 2004 the film Call Me Babylon won the Adolf Grimme Prize.
Since filmtank increasingly develops cross-media formats, new opportunities have emerged for the company. In Berlin, game designers along with filmmakers produce new interactive media. With 360 °- productions such as “netwars – out of CTRL” or “Conquest of the World” filmtank shows courage for innovation and pioneering spirit. “netwars – out of CTRL” focuses on backgrounds, causes and possible consequences of virtual attacks on a variety of platforms. The project includes an interactive graphic novel, an interactive webdoc, a television documentary and a fictional TV-movie. The project was developed in the Documentary Campus Master School in 2011, is funded by the medienboard Berlin / Brandenburg and the MFG media and film funding of Baden-Württemberg and has also won ZDF / Arte as the broadcasting channel.
The cross-media project “Conquest of the World” consists of a two-part documentary (in co-production with the Berlin production company fernsehbüro), a web application “Captain’s Log” and a thematically linked online game “New Horizon”. Up to now, filmtank gained several partners for the different platforms including ZDF / Arte and other international broadcasters, film funding Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, MFG media and film funding in Baden-Württemberg and the French film funding CNC (interactive media).
filmtank also launched the nonprofit company “IMF – Interactive Media Foundation” to transport the objective content of education in modern multimedia applications.
Since June 2013 FILMTANK AUDIENCE GmbH started to work as an affliated firm based in Hamburg. Its first release “Cesar’s Grill” by Dario Aguirre, which will start in October 2013.
