I run Opensuse 13.1/64 with kernel == 3.15.2-1.gfb7c781-desktop x86_64

I have installed Firefox, Chromium and Chrome browsers

firefox -v (bin from Mozilla upstream)
Mozilla Firefox 31.0
chromium --version (bin from distro pkgs)
Chromium 35.0.1916.153
google-chrome-stable --version (bin from distro pkgs)
Google Chrome 35.0.1916.153

NO vimeo videos, e.g. vimeo.com/channels/boostmobile/94077235, play reliably in

firefox, my user profile, all extensions ON
firefox, vanilla profile
chromium, vanilla profile

in all 3 browsers, on 1st play-attempt of an in-broser vimeo video, I/O saturates my inbound net connection at 100% for up to ~ 60 seconds. most of the time, the net traffic then drops to 0%, and the video never plays. very ocassionally, the video starts to play after ~ another 30-60 seconds.

In Google Chrome, ALL vimeo videos play, without issue, with streaming playback starting instantly on click-to-play.

Repeatable on multiple desktops.

No response here, but I *HAVE* gotten 3 marketing emails from Vimeo since I registered.

Woohoo? Um ... NOT!

Hi there, Thank you for the detailed report. I'm flying solo this weekend, but I will ask one of our playback specialists to take a closer look and get back to you early next week.

Hi there, you'll want to try installing the chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package for Chromium and Firefox playback.

This is on opensuse, not ubuntu. That said, I've installed the codec for Opensuse, avaialble from the 'packman' repo (packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_13.1/Essentials/x86_64/),

rpm -qa | egrep -i "ffmpeg|chromium" | sort
chromium-35.0.1916.153-641.1.x86_64
chromium-desktop-kde-35.0.1916.153-641.1.x86_64
chromium-ffmpeg-35.0.1916.153-643.1.x86_64

ffmpeg-2.2.4-4.1.x86_64
ffmpegthumbnailer-2.0.8-3.9.x86_64
libffmpeg-devel-2.2.4-4.1.x86_64
libffmpegthumbnailer4-2.0.8-3.9.x86_64

Note that although the packman pkg contains

rpm -ql chromium-ffmpeg-35.0.1916.153-643.1.x86_64
/usr/lib64/chromium
/usr/lib64/chromium/libffmpegsumo.so

the 'chromium-ffmpegsumo' package from Opensuse distro

software.opensuse.org/package/chromium-ffmpegsumo

which I had installed previously, is NOT sufficient for Vimeo playbackl it does not work as I'd originally reported.

Due to

"Proprietary codecs (e.g. H.264) are not part of this library, but are provided in an external package"

?

H.264 is the file type we use so it sounds like that package doesn't contain the right codecs for playback. openSUSE is kind of an edge case for us, but it seems like Fluendo has a package that would allow for playback: fluendo.com/
