Hey, all of a sudden, when you use the Full Screen button, it no longer gives me the option of toggling between full screen & actual size? I have a 30 inch monitor, and stuff looks pretty pixillated when if fills the monitor, but actual size looks much better. Hope you're not doing away with this feature! Dave B

Hi Dave, Are you referring to the scaling button? Can you please link me to the video in question (and the site where it is embedded, if applicable). I'd be happy to take a closer look. Thanks!
David Berry Plus
Sure!
Here's a sample from Vimeo:
vimeo.com/138362438
Same video embedded on my WordPress site:
lapsedtime.com/2015/09/05/cosmic-water-loop/
But actually, this is happening to all of my videos on Vimeo (and on my WordPress site). My main browser is Safari, but same thing happens on Firefox and Chrome.
Thanks! Dave B

Hi David,
We no longer provide an option to scale videos while in fullscreen. Instead, videos will always play scaled up to the size of your monitor.
This change is in anticipation of forthcoming player improvements that will allow the video resolution to change adaptively during playback. Since a constantly resizing video can be distracting, we'll always display it scaled up while in fullscreen.
We are also looking into alternate solutions for this problem, so please continue to share your feedback with us. Thank you!

I loved the Scaling button. Personally I'd rather Vimeo hadn't gone retina-aware until most people were publishing and displaying 4k video. I'd rather it was NOT retina-aware, and the Scaling button was still available. On a Retina iMac, the non-retina Vimeo system still worked perfectly and would continue to work perfectly, although scaling 4k video down would be imperceptibly worse. By upgrading Vimeo to 4k before any of us are publishing 4k means we *lose* in every category *other* than 4k. SD and 720p are now too small to view actual size - which is a reason to remove the scaling button. However, people with 27" and bigger displays can't watch anything except 4k at full screen - unless they roll their chairs back 2-3 feet. I religiously watch everything at actual size. (I ClipGrab videos so I can watch at actual size!) I don't like soft images. Vimeo ain't even 4k yet! Sad.

I'm also deeply missing scale to actual size (and square avatars). This was the one feature not offered by YouTube that made Vimeo videos better to watch. If resolution changes adaptively you could offer an option that allows a user to set the video frame size so that they always have a 720p video frame for example.

I would also like to complain at the lack of the actual size scaling control. I have many videos at PAL size which look awful on a 27-30 inch monitor and the loss of this control is a disaster! The softness of the scaling of even 720p and 1080p videos when scaled to 2560x1440 (or more) is hard to bear.

Awww! I only just discovered the "actual size" option a couple months ago, loved it! I have a 30" monitor, and everything (at least my stuff), looks so pixillated when enlarged to full screen, "actual size" looked a lot sharper & clearer to me. I look forward the new player improvements. Thanks,
Dave B

I came here exactly to know if anything was said in the forum about this only to find out that you removed that option. I also don't like watching a video out of native resolution and since I'm a basic user who can't upload Full HD video I strongly dislike the fact all my videos are upscaled all the time without an option to watch original size.
Vimeo has always looked to offer the best quality and you know pretty well that watching in native resolution looks much better than any upscaling so I don't understand what you're doing here.
Please put the button back until you find a better solution.
Mark Staff
Basic members can now upload 1080p.

That's new? I don't remember receiving a newsletter for this excellent news.
When I look in the FAQ I'm not sure if you are right or if FAQ needs to be updated:

Yes! We just rolled this out a few days ago.
Rhialto
Wow this is truely awesome! I think I will revisit all my videos now. :-)
I will also delete a copy of one on YouTube because FHD was only available there.
BTW I just tried to upload a FHD version of a previous video and when I click HD I only see 3 options, 720p, 360p and 360p again. Bug?

I'm looking into this

I'm sorry, I jumped the gun - basic members are still limited to 720p but VERY SOON we will roll out 1080p support. I can't give you an exact ETA, but it's coming.

Ok then... it was Christmas before Christmas. :-) Hope it will happen in 2015!
I'm really happy about this though!

Cheers!! :)

Happy New Year! Got a date for this?

We can't comment on future releases, sorry. We just don't know.

I also really, really prefer "actual size" to full screen on my Mac monitor. I also make editing decisions knowing viewers will see "actual size".
I'm looking forward Vimeo's "alternate solutions for this problem".

Thanks for your feedback, Dan.

Mark,
Please bring back the scaling feature. If a video is 1280x720 then I want to watch at that size and not scaled up to fit my monitor when in full screen. Black borders around a 720p video are OK - a 720p video scaled up to fit a 1920x1080 monitor is definitely not OK!

You need the scaling button. Why on earth would you get rid of that? Makes me wonder who you have working there. Seriously I dont want you to automatically scale my vids for me. Cant you just leave a good thing alone. By the way the new player with black all the way to the edges is no good either.

Thanks for your feedback, John. I will definitely pass this along to our product team!

Please bring back the scaling button...as a few have commented above, 720p content shown at full screen on a monitor above 22" looks terrible.
Not all of us have:
a) internet speeds, stability to upload at higher resolutions
b) 4k capable cameras and the necessary editing hardware
c) retina screens
I cringe now when I look at mine & others' 720p content on my 22" monitor...I hate to think what it looks like on a 27" monitor

Thanks for your thoughts, John! I've made note of them and am passing them on to our product team!

Hi I agree with the above comments the scaling button is a much smarter way of viewing work, i think most viewers will simply be skipping the videos as the quality is so reduced at full screen. and the black either side is distracting from the rest of the page layout looks like the page hasn't loaded properly. ??

I suppose the more of us complaining about it maybe you''ll bring back the native button. I was comparing just now my native 1080p monitor and my retina imac and wow, the native 1080p monitor is so much nicer to watch. Watching a 720 or 1080 video on a retina is plain dumb and painful, scaling, blurriness, it's just not professional, and when you have clients sitting next to you it's not cool when they ask, "Why does the video look blury?"

I completely agree.
I was showing my work to a potential customer and I did not realize this change.
My 720p videos on a 5120x2880 iMac 27" were a joke. No way to show the original work. Even on my 1080p monitor my video looks terrible.
You ruined my day and my job.

AGGGHHH. Please bring BACK this essential option. Don't become YouTube. Please. Its the only way to really see the details in various videos as they were intended. When you're only options are tiny window or scaled and pixelated, you loose all the coolness that was Vimeo.
Why in the world do this????
Chris Pettit Plus
Just went back and searched out some of the videos I've posted over time using Vimeo, I simply CAN NOT believe you got rid of this scaling function. Whether on Vimeo or posted through FB or elsewhere, why am I paying you $60 a year when I can get crap deployment on youTube for free????
PLEASE BRING THIS BACK!!!!!
You guys used to be different. What in the world is happening over there???
BTW, here is my other account. And I manage a whole bunch more for clients:

I also arrived here while searching about the sudden disappearance of the scale button. I miss the scale button a lot, it was one very cool unique Vimeo feature!
I have a good internet connection but I notice that buffering goes a bit too slow for my Vimeo videos, and so showing 1080p versions is not a practical option. And full size 720p does not look good in big screens.
If there are any improvements in the works, I don't see any purpose of making the current player worst.

I need the scaling button again.
All my video were loaded at 720p and now on 1080p monitors and above the quality is ugly!!!
I've just showed my video to a customer on his 27" Mac retina display and everything was terrible.
Why on earth you removed one of the few things differentiated you from YT????
Mark Staff
Thank you for your feedback!

PLLLEEEAAAASSSE bring back the scaling option. As everyone one else has already pointed out, everything looks terrible when automatically scaled up bigger than it should be.
I'm sure Vimeo used to position itself as the pro choice for video makers. Is this still the case? What kind of pro service forces its paying customers to watch their work, and that of their peers, as a soft pixelated mess.
