CHI 2012 Work in Progress
People lay themselves on the bed when they get tired.
They are likely to do something such as reading books or taking easy exercise.
However, it is inconvenient to move their body lying down.
The reason why we plan this project stems from the idea that people could do many things with several simple gestures when they feel tired.
Using Microsoft Kinect, it is possible to give commands to the computer using slight gesture thanks to its internal depth-sensing cameras without controllers.
We also believe that the ceiling which has been overlooked so far compared with other spaces to display despite its potential usability, because people naturally see the ceiling against the bed when people lie on their back.
We created Hands-Up system by combining 'lie on a bed' situation with the video beamer projecting the image upon the ceiling.
The users can run some applications such as checking to-dos or controlling home appliances lying on the bed with bare hands’ motion.
Thus, we made a prototype and designed User Interface (UI) suitable for the system.
