In November 2012 several workshops took place in The Gambia and taught 18 students between the ages of 16 and 20 at The Gambia Senior Secondary School in Banjul the basics of photography in relation to themselves and their environment. They discussed the techniques employed by famous photographers to capture the attention and the imagination of the audience, whilst also conveying a message or expression; they also did practical exercises using photographic technology that produced immediate results.
Each of the students were given a disposable camera to use over 4 days and the photographs were developed in The Gambia to be discussed in the final workshop. The Gambian students' photographs have now been exhibited in London and published in a book designed by Silvia Weber (silviaweber.at). This is a short film showing the workshops and giving context to the project. For more information take a look at: gambiamad.com
