Original clip from Matt Turner: vimeo.com/54702961
The last shot from Matt was shot at ISO 12800. I was impressed with how much detail there was in the image despite quite visible noise. The noise is also much finer than what you'd expect from a DSLR.
I was curious to see what noise reduction would do to this clip. I have applied Neat Video in fcpx at around 40% strength. I did NOT want to remove all noise as that would create a plastic look that would almost certainly introduce banding on web delivery. Fine noise or texture also helps with perceived sharpness, so it's good to leave some.
The macro blocking that you can see in the Neat Video clip here, does not show up when I export as ProRes, for what it's worth.
My source material was the Vimeo downloadable file that Matt provided, so it wasn't from native or ProRes.
