"The Liberty Crew scoured the planet in search of a magical and mythical place. A place buried deep in the ocean. A place of great spiritual powers. What they found was something they never expected..."
This work was done during the last 6 months at Vancouver Film School (3D Animation & VFX - Modelling Stream). It tells the story of a boat crew who chased down a maritime urban legends, and shows their alleged fate as they finally found it.
From the beginning I decided to make a story, not just a reel, and for that I needed to take the audience on an ever changing journey. That meant making the story and visuals evolving and building up suspense. The environment was split into two distinct parts, which I did to take the audience on a journey from realism to surrealism/fantasy. And for that, I used two different colour palettes: 1- a desaturated aqua/green/blue for the first part (boat scenes); 2- an over saturated mix of blue/pink/purple/orange for the second part (cave, city and character). Even the shapes were altered to make those two environments more distinguishable.
The character is essentially a sentinel, so she had to move quickly and stealthy, at the same time strong enough to fight off intruders. So for the design, I gave her a jellyfish/squid bottom for maneuverability, and a muscular humanoid upper body so the audience would relate to her. Plus she can blend with the environment by changing her entire body almost invisible.
A reel with different realities, atmospheres, back stories, and characters required an in-depth research for references. I used many different references from different places and chose picked them to make the overall reel cohesive. The references include:
1- Deep ocean footage (used for terrain design and topology, look development and lighting scenarios).
2- Jellyfish footage (for the characters look and the way she swims. Beautiful creatures if I may add)
3- Blizzard worlds (I used references from each different game to published and used it for the cave design, city matte painting and character design. Plus I love the way they develop their stories using different mediums and techniques).
4 - Tron (mainly for the glowing pattern on the character)
5- Avatar (mainly for the glowing pattern on the character's face and the cave entrance design)
6- The Hobbit and Hellboy series for the amazing work they did on Smaug's and Abe Sapien's eye blinks.
7- Anatomy references.
6- After Effects
I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed working on it!...
