Sept 16 is both the anniversary of Maria Callas' death in 1977, and also the day in 2013 that Canadian filmmaker and doctor John Greyson and Tarek Loubani began their hunger strike after 30 days of unjust incarceration by the Egyptian government. The aria "Vissi d'arte", closely associated with Callas, is about living for one's art and convictions which not only resonates for Maria, but also John and Tarek.
I-CON is a year-long extended piece of performance art that raises the issues and fetish of iconicity, refracted through gay (musical) icons. When Stephen takes his turn at open-mic, he disrupts audience expectations by performing the gay icon’s signature song in their persona and vocal style on the week of their birthday / anniversary of death.
