Hello viewer, my name is Justin Smart and I’ve produced a short film to express my feelings on our white supremacist society. In my poems I make an out lash at the way white supremacy hangs over us particularly African Americans. In my analogies I wanted to portray a lot of the things I’ve learned at UG over this course of 3 weeks in my own format. And I based my writing on one of Bell Hooks articles “The Oppositional Gaze” that really peaked my interest. Basically the oppositional Gaze if you don’t know is taking time to examine the things we view on an everyday basis and see how these ideas are how White people CHOOSE to see us.
The view I was pointing out is important to me as an individual because I find it really crazy and infuriating that these thing aren’t even taught in school. Also how you’d have to really search for these articles if you wanted to find out more on how that white supremacy is holding us down where they want us.
In this short film one thing I wanted to represent was the people who aren’t aware of how the society we live in is limiting how much we can grow and prosper. And the fact that if we band together in a sense we could overthrow that white supremacy hold over us.
In this film I also wanted to particularly critique “we the people” view on the world around us, and open their eyes to what's happening. Because it’s not that they're ignorant on purpose. But I wanted to provide that insight for them.
Lastly, I want to state my politics on what my film expresses. I don’t mean politics as in who you should vote for. I mean it in a sense of taking a stand in our society and our own community and being that voice that expresses that I’m aware of what the system is doing and I don’t like it. I refuse to let it bend me to what it expects of me and break free from that hold of white supremacy.
