On Sunday the 9th of February 2013, the pride of St Kilda hosted it's popular St Kilda Festival with seven stages and a multitude of performers. The day before in a beautifully decorated house in a tree lined avenue in St Kilda, there was an alternative St Kilda Festival of another kind for the real music lovers.
At this invite only affair, the day started at 4:30pm on a beautiful sunny 41 degree afternoon with an excellent set from Harry Howard & The NDE (as in The Near Death Experience). It features Harry and his partner Edwina Preston and the dynamic duo of Dave Graney and Clare Moore. They were featured witty pop songs from their acclaimed latest album, 'Pretty'. The banter between songs was funny and there is an evil touch of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood with some of the duets that Harry sings with Edwina.
After a beautiful meal prepared by our hosts, a cool refreshing brew and some chit chat with the guests, it was time for the next act to appear in the front room.
It was none other than Ronny Pop himself with the full band of Ron S Peno & The Superstitions. Their latest album, 'Anywhere And Everything Is Bright' sounds like Died Pretty reincarnated and the band live is a tour de force. Ron sweeps into a trance like state and delivers shadow boxing dance moves and soaring vocals. He is a such a unique and gifted performer and truly if you have never seen Ron Peno perform live, you are missing something special.
They never play encores but on this special night the band regroups for two more songs. Ron was completely spent, with sweat dripping from every pour of his body. On this night it was Ron S Peno and The Superstitious Sauna. It was an amazing day and a big thank you to our two special hosts Baz and Susan Williams for opening up their lovely home and organising such a special day. What a treat!
