The Kawawatari Jinkosai (River Crossing Festival) at Fuji Hachimangu is one of Fukuoka Prefecture’s five great festivals. The shrine deity “boards” a portable shrine and goes on a journey across the river. In this narrative, each float is tasked with assisting in the shrine’s safe passage. As the story goes, during the Eiroku era (1558-1569), an epidemic took its toll on the area, so villagers turned to Fuji Hachimangu, the local deity, and prayed for the plague to pass. In thanks for their wishes being fulfilled, the townspeople built pennant-bearing floats as offerings. This festival has been practiced for 450 years.
