Hope’s Diary, a theatre project made by young people in partnership with Live Theatre, Helix Arts and Children North East, was performed at the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 20th June 2012. The event was hosted by Sharon Hodgson MP, Labour Member of Parliament for Washington and Sunderland West who is currently Shadow Children and Families Minister.
The project saw a group of youngsters work together in October 2011 to create a theatre piece about a day in the life of a character called Hope, looking at poverty through a child’s eyes. The piece was first performed at a Children North East poverty event at The Sage Gateshead on 23rd October 2011 and also at the Tyneside Cinema where it was captured on film. The project, which was supported by The Webb Memorial Trust, also involved over 600 young people from the north east being given disposable cameras. The photographs form an exhibition of powerful images and captions which illustrate their life, which will also be on display at the Houses of Parliament event.
