Beauty. Goodness. Truth. Some journeys start in the middle. For New York based jazz drummer, producer and composer, Jaimeo Brown, this pathway finds itself at a crucial juncture. In the following months after the release of his first recording as a bandleader, the critically acclaimed, "Transcendence", the stage is set as we follow the preparation of Jaimeo’s international tour, with acclaimed veteran saxophonist JD Allen and Grammy winning producer Chris Sholar. During intense rehearsals, the notion of “discovery” and exploration of ideals leads to an impromptu visit down to Gee’s Bend, Alabama, where lie the roots of the spirituals that provide inspiration not only in Jaimeo’s music but in his everyday interactions with family and community. In Gee’s Bend, Jaimeo finally meets with China Pettway, Mary Ann Pettway, Lorrain Pettway, Mary Lee Bendolph and Reva Mosley, the closely knit family group of quilters/singers known as the Singers of Gee’s Bend. Weaving between conversations and understanding in Alabama to musical and personal explorations in New York, this documentary portrait of a musical artist examines the lessons of the past, the trials in the present and the hopefulness for the future. Here, everyone is invited to take part in Jaimeo Brown's Transcendence.
