The Panopticon was originally a prison designed by English philosopher Jeremy Bentham in 1785.

The architecture allowed the guard to remain unseen while observing all prisoners. The Panopticon was never built but Bentham's efforts have been considered influential to the likes of Michel Foucault, who later correlated modern society with the "idea" of the Panopticon.

Foucault's writings about the Panopticon can be found in his book, Discipline and Punish (1975).
