This short video showcases a trip I made for my employer (Telstra) in 2007. We "drove" our specially modified 4WD Toyota Land-Cruiser, complete with railway wheels on over 1600km of railway track as part of a survey expedition from Port Augusta, in South Australia, to Kalgoorlie, in Western Australia. This 2 minute set of highlights attempts to give you a feel for what the countryside is like in this vast uninhabited part of the Australian continent.
The aim of the trip was to complete the design of cellular telephone network coverage for Telstra's NextG cellular and wireless broadband network that, at least in this section, was to be solar powered. This was part of a larger project aimed at ultimately providing cellular 3G coverage along the entire national rail corridor, coast to coast across the continent, linking the Pacific to the Indian Ocean.
The movie was shot with a Panasonic GS500 PAL Camcorder in wide screen and was edited with Adobe Premiere CS3. Mercali image stabilisation was used extensively as the filming platform offers anything but a smooth ride!
