Font des Verger & Sa Fábrica (Sa Costera, Mallorca, 28.01.2017)
"Sa Fábrica" is an abandoned hydro-electric plant that delivered electricity to the town of Sóller between ca. 1908 and 1962. With a massive production of up to ca. 140,000 metric cubes per day, the well "Font des Verger" is one of the most important wells of the Tramuntana mountains. Even during Mallorca's hot and dry summer months, visitors can admire a beautiful waterfall with super-cold water coming directly from the heart of the Tramuntana.
A recently constructed underwater pipeline transports water from "Font des Verger" to the town "Port de Sóller". From there the water is pumped to other parts of the island - especially to the capital "Palma de Mallorca". The total costs of this pipeline project exceeded 80 mio. EUR. (ca. 90 mio US $)
But the history of this site dates back even further: Already in the mid of the 19th century, the water from this well was used to power the hammers of a forge that produced pig iron, extracted from a nearby mine.
