A film by Joao Meirinhos
Completed as a final project for the MA in Visual Anthropology, Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology, University of Manchester.
'Afluentes' are small rivers or streams that flow towards a bigger river or lake.
In this case, the 'bigger river or lake' symbolizes Ayahuasca - an ancient psychedelic brew that opens up new doors of perception to those who dare to drink it. The mysterious so called 'the vine of the dead' that brought together a teacher, a traveler and a desperate man to the same place.
This documentary deals with the increase of 'spiritual tourists' in the Peruvian Amazon, neo-shamanism and the healing potentials of traditional plant medicine.
'Afluentes' is the first part of a full feature documentary entitled: 'El Espejo del Espíritu' (The Mirror of the Spirit).

My intent is to bring about a more ethnographic view of what surrounds the phenomena of those who seek Ayahuasca by talking, not just to experts but, with everybody I meet during this fieldwork in Peru; to understand the framework of their belief system and how these spiritual voyages influence peoples' normal lifestyle.
