International Worker’s Day and Immigrants’ Rights Day was celebrated with an all day General Strike across the US and the world. In Oakland, the day began with multiple smaller marches to address specific problems affecting the city and our culture. These marches coalesced into a noon rally that was interrupted when the OPD tackled a young woman off her bike and then shot tear gas into the crowd.
The marches continued throughout the evening attracting thousands of participants before concluding with a peaceful gathering and food at Oscar Grant Plaza. The night unfortunately ended with some violence as the OPD decided to forcefully remove an remaining protesters from the park after dark. Nonetheless the day appeared a success and was a sign of things to come in the spring.
