The people of Montana is in the midst of a political battle over the future of legalized medical marijuana.
Since late 2008, when the US Attorney General announced that medical marijuana cases wouldn’t be prosecuted, the number of card-carrying patients in this small state has shot up by a factor of six. Now about three per cent of Montanans carry medical marijuana patient cards.
Opposition to the booming industry reached a climax in May 2010, when two medical marijuana dispensaries were firebombed. Although no one was injured, the acts delivered a powerful message.
Al Jazeera English’s David Mercer visited Montana, and came back with this report.
