The Netherlands were done for. The Second World war had left the country in grim misery. Too many people, not enough homes. Too little future, too little hope. Sjouke Zwaagstra grew up on the Dutch countryside. The tiny village of Tjerkwerd was home to quite some people hiding from the Nazi’s. When the war was over they weren’t the only ones leaving Tjerkwerd. Many villagers left the country to look for a better future overseas. On the 27th of april 1951 Sjouke arrived in Halifax, Canada. Over sixty years later he looks back on his eventful life and rediscovers his identity.
