Opening Suitcases is a tragi-poetic rumination on a television game show. On the surface, this popular television show appears to be a simplistic game of chance. In fact, it is a vehicle through which American popular culture gives vent to our fear of failure, humiliation and death relating to the war in Iraq.
Made to stand on its own, O.S. now forms part of the longer movie, Future Antiquity (last on my list of movies here on Vimeo). This original short was screened in the 2007 Ann Arbor and Athens International Film Festivals.
The notion of a future antiquity, a future so distant that even our age will be considered the most ancient history, expresses an inverted optimism that posits both our own demise (as a positive force), and continuity in our aftermath (as inevitable).
