This is a very short clip - in the film it will be a quick insert in a longer scene.
To try to add a little dramatic tension, I wanted to show the Colonel's reflection in the hood of the 'Cuda as he passed by, scanning the night for enemies.
I had footage of the Colonel walking in front of the garage, but the 'Cuda could not be there at the time of filming.
So, I took a HD still shot by Wade Crary of the hood of the 'Cuda, flipped the footage of the Colonel horizontally and laid it flat across the hood (after adding an optical flare [VideoCopilot] for the flashlight on his Uzi).
I made the footage semi-transparent and then applied Digieffects Freeform (digieffects.com/product/freeform_ae, which came with CS5) to just the footage, using the grid to mimic the changes in the surface of the 'Cuda hood.
Then I added overall lighting to the comp and reduced the saturation of the images to make it look more like night. I used a camera to add some movement and a quick zoom.
As you can see, the Freeform grid did a great job (the only limit is the operator, me) to make the footage look like a slightly distorted refection on the hood of the car.
The clip was so short that I did some time remapping to stretch it out a little.
I am still going to mess with this more, but this was what can be done with only a limited knowledge of Freeform, all in just a couple of minutes.
