The last of a series documenting the WWII wrecks of Savo Sound - also called Ironbottom Sound, after the number of ships sunk during the fierce fighting of the Solomon Islands campaign.
USS John Penn APA-23 was the military designation of the liner SS Excambion after acquisition by the navy and refit as a troop transport. She was sank on 13th August 1943 in 57m close to Henderson Field, Guadalcanal.
