In this video, filmed in Bangalore on the 16th of june 2010, Darshan Shankar takes us for a visit of the Foundation for the Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT) and the Institute for Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (IAIM). In the process, we learn a lot about Indian Health traditions, their challenges in the contemporary setting and their dialogue with modern science.
"We have advice given in the major textbook of Ayurveda, which is called the Charaka Samhita, in which Charaka, one of the most respected authors of Ayurveda, says that the science of Ayurveda shall never achieve finality. It is continuously evolving. It must be open to receiving knowledge from any source, even an unfamiliar source. It must examine it carefully and see wether it can be assimilated, utilized. But it should forever be open." Darshan Shankar
"All knowledge systems do support open mindedness. In practice you don't find holders of these formal knowledge systems sufficiently open to dialogue. And, therefore, we of course need to conduct the dialogue. But, we also need people who are more open minded than others to draw up a framework for this dialogue." Darshan Shankar
"The framework of the dialogue between traditional knowledge and science, the general framework, is the framework of the relationship between the whole and the part." Darshan Shankar
"Life is not a void to be filled. It is a plenitude to be discovered." Christoph Eberhard
