Experimental filmmaker and expanded cinema maker, currently living and working in Leeds, UK. Working predominantly with celluloid, Byrne is interested in what it means to use film in the digital era, often making work which explores the possibilities and limitations of the medium. In her expanded cinema performances, she intervenes into the projection machinery to create films that can only be experienced in the moment of their making.
As well as making, screening and performing her own work, Byrne programmes, teaches and writes about artists’ film. She views her filmmaking practice as one that continues in the experimental, grass-roots tradition of autonomy in all aspects of film production, exhibition and dissemination, and views collaboration with others as a creative and economic necessity.
