Kismet Records independent London based electronic dance label, was founded by husband and wife Rui & Gilly Da Silva in February 1999. ‘Kismet’, a Turkish word for ‘fulfilment of destiny’, not only represents anyone committed to that genuine underground house sound, but also heralds the fulfilment in destiny of a dedicated musical pioneer and label owner, Rui Da Silva.
The first release “The Lights” by Portuguese dance band Underground Sound of Lisbon (Dr J aka Rui Da Silva and DJ Vibe) which gained astounding reviews in all major UK & Portuguese dance press and set Kismet strongly on the map.
Kismet was also the birth place of CocoDaSilva a collaboration between Chris Coco & Rui Da Silva in which their first release “Lost” got just about everyone taking notice of this new exciting independent label. CocoDaSilva went on to release a string of releases including “@Night”, “Coissa Nossa”, “The Shiva Chant” and most recently “Don’t Say Nothing EP” released in 2011. “Saudade” is their most successful to date and was included in a string of compilations including Danny Tenaglia’s Global Underground series along with scoring independent chart success in DMC, Coolcuts and Dance charts. DJ magazine once asked “is Kismet the new Tribal” while media reviews were often declaring “another great track from Kismet”. Kismet’s first signing was DJ and producer Marcelo Castelli from Uruguay who gave us Caveman, who then went on touring the world releasing records with fellow progressive house labels Bedrock and Low Pressings.
Whilst the label was gaining mass attention and riding high on its success, Rui was busy in the studio working on Kismet’s 4th release “ Touch Me” a song which featured and broke busker vocalist Cassandra Fox into the mainstream. It was this song that catapulted Kismet for being recognised as one of the most successful independent labels in the 90’s. Reaching No1, in the Coolcuts, DMC, Dance Charts and official mainstream No1 in the UK and five other European countries including Spain and Rui’s home country Portugal. Not long after its success, the industry was facing a huge change in how people were purchasing music and DJ’s were now switching to CD’s this sent waves throughout the industry, forcing distributors, records stores and labels to go bust including Kismet’s own distributor Intergroove. Although Kismet survived, the releases slowed down which let Rui take some time to reflect have a family and take a 3 year sabbatical in Ibiza.
Kismet releases have featured in countless DJ charts whilst maintaining a strong following and support over the years from the worlds biggest international DJ’s including Sasha, John Digweed, Carl Cox, Lee Burridge, Danny Tenaglia , Deep Dish, Tiesto, Armin Van Burren, Fergie, Judge Jules, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Steve Lawler, DJ Shadow, Dubfire, Stacey Pullen, Maya Jane Coles, My Favourite Robot and more. In light of Rui’s passion, dedication, and talent, ‘Kismet’ will strive to release only those records that maintain with his pursuit for quality and innovation. ‘Kismet’, a label now synonymous with quality house music, will continue to satisfy an insatiable market, yearning for that dark and twisted sound.
