Maleco Collective is the brain child of critically-acclaimed Chicano Rapper Malverde and multiple Latin-Grammy nominated Indie/Pop writer/producer Marthin Chan. The two met while working on a VotoLatino.org campaign. Their common ideals on artistry and activism sparked a mutual respect and friendship. They talked about doing something progressive and outside the box. Marthin was living in Echo Park and what started as exploratory home studio sessions quickly took on a life of it's own.
Their resulting "Echo-friendly" project, Maleco Collective, transcends musical and cultural boundaries and organically blends their two worlds. It's a fusion of Hip-Hop, Rock, Reggae and Electro. Content-wise their songs range from socio-political anthems like "Yo Soy La Voz" to ode's to the romantic traditions of old with "Serenata Para Ti".
The two brought in a host of special guests including Cesar Pliego of Kinky, Cuevo Perez, Ibo Rodriguez, Argel Cota and Heidy of Los Hollywood. The Echo Park band has been steadily building their buzz with dynamic live shows and critical accolades. In a short time span Maleco Collective has been featured as a Hennessey Artistry Band. Their song "Yo Soy La Voz" was featured on Fox's Primetime show "Lie To Me" and on the VotoLatino/iTunes Compilation for The 2010 Census. Their first video "Serenata Para Ti" was MTV Tr3s "Discover and Download" song/video of the month (12/09) and their EP's title track "Al Horizonte'" was selected as "Today's Top Tune" (01/10) on global tastemaker station KCRW.
Most recently they made Latina Magazine's annual list of "Best Latin Music You Haven't Heard" (Jun/Jul 10) and were nominated by nationally syndicated TV show American Latino as "Favorite American Latino Indie Artist" (June 10). The recent digital release of Maleco Collective's 7 song "Al Horizonte EP" serves as a taste of their full length album coming soon.
