Maraya is a media art project created by Henry Tsang, M. Simon Levin and Glen Lowry, Vancouver-based artists and educators fascinated by the uncanny resemblance between Vancouver's False Creek and the Dubai Marina in the UAE. Over the past five years, they have researched and documented the phenomenal movement of architects, urban planners and development between these two very different yet similar and interconnected places. They have presented exhibitions in Vancouver and Dubai, public lectures and programmes, workshops and an online platform that invites viewers to interact with a database containing thousands of photographs and hours of video footage. The aim is to provoke discussion and consideration of how built environments are planned and activated through complementary lectures, walking tours and discussions. Upcoming activities include a symposium with an edited critical volume and a cultural exchange.
