The MGA Collection has its genesis in the late 1970s with the Waverley City Gallery. Since then, the gallery has maintained a nationally significant collection of Australian photography, the only specialist collection of its kind in the country. Today, the MGA Collection numbers more than 2 200 photographs, reflecting the history and development of Australian photographic practice from the nineteenth century to today. As Australia’s only public art gallery dedicated to the collection and promotion of Australian photography, MGA holds a very special place in the country’s network of art galleries and museums. The collection includes substantial holdings of many of Australia’s greatest photographers, including David Moore, Max Dupain, Wes Stacey, Pat Brassington, Bill Henson and Tracey Moffatt.
