Miguel Vassy was born in Uruguay in 1971, then he has to exile in 1974 to France with his parents because of the dictatorship in his country. He grow and study in France until he was eighteen years old. Then he went back to South America to rediscover his country and continent, where he use to live since that time.
Miguel Vassy has worked as photographer in different countries such as France, where he won, when he was fourteen, the first award from C.N.C. with a script for short film called “Derniere Fugue“, and shoot this first movie in super 16mm (with the D.P. Agnès Godard).
In Uruguay he shot the documentary “Candombe Street of Heart“ about the afrouruguayan drum culture.
In Algeria where he live one year, (1999) he shot the documentary “Frantz Fanon, Mémoires d´asile“ with the argelian director Abdenour Zahzah, about the political activist in the colonial argelian war, Frantz Fanon.
Lately, he has settled down in Rio de Janeiro where he has been working as a Director of Photography mainly in documentaries for the las twelve years.
Some of them are “Falcão, meninos do tráfico”, directed by MV Bill and Celso Athaide, which was awarded with the Spain King Prize to the Best Documentary in 2007 and "Vladimir Herzog" in .
He was co director and photographer of the documentary about Rap in Cuba called “Soy Rapero”, directed by Katia Lund (the co-director of “City of God“) and produced by Zohar Films.
In 2001 he was in charge of the photography of five programs entitled “Música Libre” about Caribbean Music which were made by Carolina Sá and produced by Video Films.
In Cuba he filmed the documentary “Rocha que voa” with Eryk Rocha, which is about the Brazilian film maker Glauber Rocha work and the “Cinema Novo” movement and was awarded with several international prizes (“Tudo e verdade”, “Cinesul”, festival of Montreal, Locarno).
He also made the photography of some videoclips such as: “Problema” from the Cuban musician René Ferrer which was awarded with the prize “Lucas” to the best photography in Cuba.
In 2010, he shot “Transeunte”,the first feature film directed by the famous Brazilian director Eryk Rocha) and produced by Water Salles, that was awarded until today with more than seventeen international prizes.
Recently he Shot the documentary "Jards" also directed by Eryk Rocha (award with best director in Rio festival 2012, and participation in more than 10 festvals until now.)
He had the pleasure to work and shoot the first documentary of Petra Costa. The film "Elena" participate of festival Hotdoc, award in the festival Films de femme, FIC Guadalajara special award, best documentary award at the festival of Brasilia, IDFA, Photgraphy award at the Planete doc film Varsovia, etc...)
Miguel Vassy has a degree as a Director of Photography from the International School of Cinema from San Antonio de los Baños in Cuba, 1999. He speaks French, Spanish, Portuguese and English.
