b. 1993 Hammersmith, London, MollyMae Whawell is in her final year in the Sculpture department at the Glasgow School of Art. The underlying concern of her work is in the space between the material language of sculpture and the languages of feeling and emotion; constructing objects and environments in order to tap into something abstract and fleeting, that which is not easily articulated in our written language but which can somehow be understood in firsthand physical experience. With a background in dance, the energy of much of Whawell's work is performative, with sculptures in space often being activated by live or filmed performance. Recent works have focused on the construction of large scale sculptures in order to magnify the effects of the sculptural; the falling of light on a surface, the presence of volume in space, stillness or movement.
