I am a rising junior at SCAD Atlanta, working towards a BFA in Visual Effects with a minor in Technical Direction.
My favorite package, as of right now, is Houdini, and my favorite part of visual effects production is definitely lighting. I am also gaining a love of code, and have basic knowledge of bash, python, and MEL.
In terms of inspiration from film, I am most inspired by Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "The Shining", Ridley Scott's "Alien", Martin Scorsese's "Hugo", Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke", and, yes, Cameron's "Avatar." My favorite film as a teenager was "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Jurassic Park." Those two films, as well as "Avatar" are what pushed me into a career in VSFX.
If I were not doing VSFX I would most definitely be at a college like Georgia Tech studying bioengineering or astronomy. Inspirational figures from the scientific world for me are Carl Sagan, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and Michio Kaku. I love theoretical physics, and I am glad my brother is studying it! I hope to incorporate my love of the sciences into my work. This perhaps is also an influence on my favorite artistic movement- Surrealism. The two artists that inspire me the most would have to be Rene Magritte and Giorgio de Chirico.
I hope to be able to create some fantastic work that draws from those many areas of inspiration as I continue to learn more techniques and skills at SCAD.
