Class 1: The Basics of Waist Hooping

In this class, you will learn not only how to get the hoop going around your waist, but also how to begin the process of learning how to turn with the hoop, which is the single most important fundamental skill in core hooping. Each step of each step is broken down into its individual elements, so you can know exactly where you are going from the very beginning of building your dance. Experienced hoopdancers who wish to bring more space into their core hooping will find a lot of useful information in this breakdown as well.

Listed here are the timestamps for the beginning each segment of the class (apart from 0:00, of course). If you click on any timestamp, the video will begin playing from there. This is particularly useful for pausing and practicing the technique featured in each segment, which is the approach we heartily recommend. Pause and practice each technique after each segment; then you can either begin from where you paused, or use the timestamp to click directly to the next segment:

Class 2: Exploring Inner Space and Paddles

This class will guide you towards a discovery of the Inner Space--the space that opens up between your core and the inner wall of the hoop as it is spinning. You will also learn how to make contact with the inner wall of the hoop to shape a Paddle, an acceleration of the hoop's rotation from within. We will also explore Outer Space, the space that opens up along the outer perimeter of the hoop as it rotates, and make contact with the hoop's outer wall to execute an Outer Paddle--a technique I sometimes like to call (ha ha) "Paddling from Outer Space."

Class 3: Outer Space, Breaking, and Reversing

Here we will examine Outer Space more closely, noticing its dips and rises and finding potential Points of Contact along its perimeter. Once we find those potential Points, we begin to explore how to Break the hoop (stop its momentum) and then how to turn that Break into a Reverse. If you already break and reverse the hoop, but are frustrated with your timing or planes, this class can help you tighten up and smooth out your technique.

Class 4: Shoulder Hooping

In this class, you will learn a new triangulated technique for organizing your steps, making hooping at the shoulders more spacious and forgiving. If you are new to shoulder hooping--or, new to shoulder hooping in your opposite current--you will learn how to use Paddling to build into your shoulder technique with confidence. You will also learn more about how to optimally move your arms once you have caught a consistent shoulder current.

Class 5: Leg Hooping

Hooping on the legs while dancing is one of the most difficult techniques anyone can ever learn with the hoop. The complexities of leg hooping have always been very challenging for me personally. Here, I break it down into several distinct layers of technical awareness, beginning (of course!) with stepping and turning with the hoop. From there, we will focus on how to move the hips, feet, and knees in cooperation with the spinning hoop, and finally, we will focus on rhythm. Anyone who wishes to free your legs while hooping on them will get something valuable from this class.

Class 6: Activating the Arms

In this video, we will move through several different frames, finding ways to begin to engage the arms and activate them into dance. We will use the images of circles, mudras, and birds to enliven our arm movement and come into a more expressive present with the hoop. Especially helpful for new hoopers who are at the point of wanting to bring more dance into your movement with the hoop!

Class 7: Lifting the Hoop

In this class, we will move slowly through the dynamics of lifting the hoop, exploring both currents (directions) and breaking down the differences in lifting with both Following and Leading hands. You will get an exhaustively thorough breakdown of lifting and dropping the hoop back down onto the core. Another way of engaging the arms in hoopdance, lifts open a whole new world of possible shapes and expressions through your dance. Up, up, and away!!
