Born in Norridge, IL in 1976, James Fotopoulos is a self-taught filmmaker who began production on his first feature-length film, ZERO (1997), in 1995. In 1998, he founded Fantasma for the production of his second feature film, MIGRATING FORMS (1999), and would continue to create a number of critically acclaimed feature films, such as BACK AGAINST THE WALL (2000), FAMILIES (2002), THE NEST (2003), and DIGNITY (2012).
Along with his feature film productions, Fotopoulos has built up a prolific body of over 200 video art works, which include CHRISTABEL (2001), ESOPHAGUS (2004), THE MIRROR MASK (2005), THE SKY SONG (2007) and ALICE IN WONDERLAND (2010). These works range from feature length to a few seconds long and combine an exhaustive portfolio of techniques from animation to theatrical performance.

Whether through his signature long shots, collage of archival sources or the re-enactment of fictional material that echoes the lives of his performers, Everson favors a strategy that interrupts the documentary impulse, abstracting everyday actions and statements into theatrical gestures. His work plays with the ambivalent relationships between art and narrative, fact and fiction. This screening includes a selection of shorts, from the Lumière-inspired Workers Leaving the Job Site (2013), to a dark, witty, homage to Chester Himes, Early Riser (Cotton Comes to Harlem) (2012), to an exploration of the world of black cowboys, Ten Five in the Grass (2012).

Ben Russell (b.1976, USA) is an itinerant media artist and curator whose films, installations, and performances foster a deep engagement with the history and semiotics of the moving image. He has been making films, videos, revolutionary needlepoint pillows and photographs for over a decade. His first feature film Interkosmos was called "a retro gust of communist utopianism" by the Village Voice and "charming and fantastic, so full of rare atmospheres" by Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin. His second feature La Trinchera Luminosa del Presidente Gonzalo was put on the Village Voice's Top 10 Year in Experimental Film. And Variety called The Juche Idea, his film about a North Korean art residency, "brilliant" and said all three films "upturn notions of documentary and fiction, propaganda thought, reality and restaging, and even what an 'experimental film' actually is." He is featured in a 2010 Phaidon Press book called Take 100—The Future of Film: 100 New Directors. He was born in St. Louis and teaches at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

She has received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Guggenheim Foundation, The Mexico/U.S.A. Fund for Culture, and the Bank of Austria. She teaches at the Fine Art Museum in Mexico City, leading workshops in handmade filmmaking. She received an MFA in Filmmaking from CalArts in 1998. Her films include Leche (1998), Removed (1998), Mala Leche (2003) and the new Ukrainian Time Machine (2008), made from her recent travels there, and where she is currently screening the film to its subjects.
Lee Lynch grew up in a small town in Redding California, where he began making movies at the age of 13. He was born with a rare heart defect, which inspired both the title and the subject of his first feature film “Transposition of the Great Vessels.” He recently graduated from the California Institute for the Arts’ film/video program with a BFA degree. His past work, “The Bee Hive,” has screened at Rotterdam International Film Fest and the New York Underground Film Festival. Lee Lynch and Lee Anne Schmitt are currently shooting a documentary about America’s last free-roaming bison herd.
