Shijie read Philosophy at the Singapore’s National University before going on to make films in 2007. He was awarded a national film scholarship the following year, to pursue his interests in cinema in 2008 as a student in the Graduate Film Program at New York University’s Tisch School of Arts Asia, in Singapore. To date (2015), Shijie's short filmography has screened at various festivals around the world. After his international competition debut at the 66th Venice Film Festival with ER REN (FOR TWO), his next film THE HOLE went on to win 4 awards at the Singapore Short Film Awards, including Best Film, Director & Script. NOT WORKING TODAY, his third short, would win Best Singapore Short Film at the reinvigorated Singapore International Film Festival, and premiere internationally at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.
He has recently completed THE LAKE, another short film, as part of an omnibus feature project spanning three territories (China, Singapore, Thailand).
