Legacy Fund grants distributed through Lake Region Arts Council (LRAC) have made it possible for small communities and organizations like Top Hat Theatre in Ulen to experience a level of entertainment arts, and also allow students to participate in residency opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them. Rob Anderson, Ulen-Hitterdal Band Director; Therese Vogel, Executive Director of the Top Hat Theatre; and Ron Evans, Top Hat Theatre Board member, explain how the Minnesota’s historic Legacy Fund has made an impact in west central Minnesota.
Rob: "The Legacy Fund dollars we've received have really helped bring in groups for our Top Hat performances that we would normally not be able to afford. By doing that, and some of our residency programs with these groups, our students have had the opportunities that they wouldn't otherwise have."
Therese: "We try to offer various different genres and, we feel, music that probably people around here have never seen. We had Continental Ballet in here last season. I mean it was amazing! I just sat there and thought, 'Oh my gosh how did we possibly, through a Legacy Fund grant, were we able to actually bring the Continental Ballet here that did Cinderella on our stage?' I mean it was absolutely amazing!"
Rob: "We've had the Boston Brass here, a couple of different a capella groups. In all those cases, the students have had a chance to work with them during the day, and in a couple of those instances, the students have been able to perform with the artists on the evening performance as well, which has been great for them - for the experience - but also for the community and the parents to be able to see our students on stage with these well-renowned groups. "
Ron: "All the performers that come in here, wouldn't be here if it weren't for the Legacy program that will enhance the quality of the performers that we get. It can't be exceeded, I don't think, for a small town like this."
Therese: "And we feel very fortunate to be able to bring these groups in to work with our students. Some of these things we could not do without outside funding. So the Legacy dollars bring us that experience for the adults. But for the kids, too, it was really quite a magical opportunity."
Applause is heard.
