Dedicated as a Conservative congregation in 1908 and then serving as an African Methodist Episcopal Church for the latter part of the 20th century, today Sixth & I is a non-denominational, non-membership, non-traditional synagogue offering a fluid blueprint for Jewish communal engagement in a warm, non-judgmental environment. Sixth & I aims to reinvigorate connections to community by offering outstanding programming and dialogue opportunities that speak to personal, spiritual, and social interests.
Each year, over 100,000 visitors attend programs, creative Shabbat services, and holiday celebrations in an innovative environment that bridges tradition with modernity. As an incubator of originality, Sixth & I has evolved into a cultural hub where authors, politicians, and artists at the forefront of the arts and culture scene offer dynamic experiences for the entire community. Blending the best of arts and culture with the best of spiritual services, Sixth & I is a re-imagined gateway to cultural life in Washington, DC.
