1. Exploring Virtual Reality with Zelda NES

    This project aimed to create a virtual reality experience with The Legend of Zelda NES. Players are required to wear a harness and attach themselves to cables hanging from the ceiling. The cables lifts players just high enough off the ground so that their feet can just touch a sensor beneath their feet. As players move their feet, the character in the game moves as well. Players are also required to wear a glove on their right hand, a sensor on their left wrist, and a sensor on their chest. The glove allows players to communicate with non-playable characters through social gestures as seen here: vimeo.com/120089453. By using the glove in combination with the other two sensors I mentioned, players can use their weapons in the game. For example to swing their sword, players must do a slashing motion with the right hand starting from their left wrist. To fire an arrow with the bow, players must hold out both their hands as if holding a bow, pull back the imaginary string all the way to their chest, and release their grip. Finally, players should wear some sort of virtual reality headset to fully immerse themselves in the game.

      Stanford University and Sid Lee are proud to announce their collaboration to reimagine the museum experience. The team, working with augmented content specialists Merchlar, launched a beta version of their Augmented Reality (AR) iPad application for the Anderson Collection at Stanford University. The Anderson Collection is one of the world’s largest and most outstanding private collections of 20th century American art. The eponymous museum was built to house 121 seminal works from 86 artists, including Jackson Pollock’s "Lucifer." The app uses computer vision and augmented reality (AR) to recognize artwork and surface related multimedia content. This approach lets visitors freely follow their interests and share what they learn with their social networks, thus deepening their connection to the work. Importantly, our seamless technology creates a highly personalized experience for each visitor without changing the ethos of the space or adding staff. Beyond just widening the appeal of museums to a younger, tech-driven audience, we’ve witnessed the application bring multiple generations together to explore art and cultural history. The team is currently working with several museums to further the development of this experience.
