    • SXSW 2016 - You're a Phony, And That's Okay.

      01:56

      from Chanelle Henry Added 8 0 0

There's a theme that's surfacing within our culture with the rise of authenticity, transparency, and vulnerability. We are starting to be more open and empathetic towards our peers and ourselves about our faults, and like it or not, we are discovering that we are phonies. This isn't a new phenomenon however, it's just that we are becoming more open about discussing the idea of how much the Imposter Syndrome impacts our life. Whether we embrace it, run from, reject it or hide from it, it's not going away. At the end of the day, we have to come to terms with this concept in order to get out of our own way to become what we are meant to be. We ARE phonies, but we are not alone. (imaphony.com)

            • Limit Yourself: Design Constraints Spur Creativity

              01:00

              from Sarah Lukachko Added

“Here is one of the few effective keys to the design problem—the ability of the designer to recognize as many constraints as possible…” ( Charles Eames, Design Q&A, 1972 ) A fundamental joy of good design is successfully solving a problem. Our small, in-house team invited numerous problems when we took on a new responsibility with unfamiliar content, high visibility, limited time, and uneven skills. There were a few hiccups. But by enumerating constraints -- and inventing new ones -- we created over 1200 new illustrations in under nine months. At the same time, we improved the team's creativity, morale, technical skills, and stature.

Smart phones have become a remote control for our lives and we’re too tethered to these devices. But is this how we want to interact w/ the world, staring at a small screen as we walk around like zombies? It’s time for designers to consider new ways to interact w/ the Internet of everything surrounding us. IoT has arrived with a growing focus on machine-to-machine communication, but human-to-machine communication is equally important in this new frontier of UI design. Think Human UI, where our movements, voice, thoughts, etc. cause systems to respond to us through our environment. Smart devices can play a role, but invisible & screen-less interfaces are critical for creating the best experiences.

The cultural wealth of nations is vast and varied. But what if we could put them all together? What would the 'ideal country' look like? In a new study with Wharton and U.S. News, we asked 18,000 global citizens, business leaders and influentials to rate 60 countries on 75 dimensions. For instance, Sweden is seen as the most environmentally friendly; income equality is best among The Danes; Australia is the ideal place to raise a family. Linking perceptions to GDP, our expert panel will unpack the data and build the composite picture of the perfect nation. While we’re far from it today, what leadership and policy implications can result by learning and applying what every country does best? Vote for us on the SXSW Panel Picker starting August 10! panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote
