Odessa 100 2013 This was my first experience riding Odessa, my body is sore and bruised but even after a few days, the smile on my face still hasn't gone away... I gotta say, i was quite nervous and apprehensive about the whole thing considering i'm more of a weekend warrior type of rider and never get to ride this type of terrain where im from. The Iron man on saturday was a perfect way to get to know the dessert terrain and what to expect from the race... but most of all just how much endurance you will actually need to complete the 100 miles ! Sunday morning, and the rain was still coming down.... and all i could think was, 'foggy and blurry goggles' are going to make it a very sketchy start (as if it wasn't already !). The infamous mass- running start was the only part i was really unsure of, and didn't know how much chaos it was going to be.... As I sat in the riders meeting trying to calm down my heart rate... I heard the words "start your engines"... at which point nearly 700 dirt bikes around me were revved up ready for the ride ahead of them...like a bull getting rattled up before a bull fight. This sound vibrated through my body and make the hair stand up on end on the back of my neck... my adrenalin kicked in, and i felt ready ! Riding over to the start line, we were getting a taster of what it would be like riding inches away from so many bikes ! Standing in the line up waiting for the gun to go off... there was an eary silence across the dessert...the rain was spitting, and there was a slight breeze blowing... almost like a scene at the end of an epic war battle. Bang ! The gunshot goes off... and the mayhem starts ! I had thought about what it was going to be like... but nothing prepares you for the kind of carnage that came in the first 5 minutes of that race ! A swift kick and jump on the seat and it was each for their own, side by side, inches from the wheels and bars of hundreds of bikes around you... Weaving in and out of the bushes, and trying to find a path while kicking through the gears and speeding up blindly, giving it a little bit more than you are feeling safe with... trying to get ahead of the pack. As the wide open area funnelled down to some single track trails, there were bikes and people being flung everywhere... finding a different path in split seconds, and making quick decisions to get around them, and keep up the pace you will need to sustain to get remotely close to finishing. Breathing hard, and holding on tight makes alot of riders tired quickly, and shortly after about the first 10 miles, the gaps between the riders starts to open up at which point you feel like you can finally relax, breathe and start getting into your rhythm and pace. I quickly realized this is not a race you can win by going fast alone... its an endurance game that you must sustain to complete the race. As the lap went on, the weather got better and everyone seemed to settle into their own pace... The second lap is where you really see the endurance kick in, but so does the mentality of the riders... it has gone from a race against each other, to a competition against the dessert... there are alot of bikes broken at the side lines, with just as many broken riders... but the riders dont just ride pass by, they stop and help each other out.... I had a few little spills on the bike over the many, many sandy whoops and being helped up, and asked if was ok every time was very re-assuring, and from that point on I didn't feel alone in the race anymore... it felt like i was riding with friends i just hadn't met yet. There is a special energy that goes along with Odessa, and memories that will last a life time...With so many stories to tell, and laughs to be had until i can go back to do it all again next year ! I can't wait ...... this is something i will be clearing my calendar for, for many years to come ! Thanks to all the organizers and sponsors who make this possible... Your efforts do not go un-noticed ! All footage was taken with my gopro hero 3, and the song is Climbatize by The Prodigy

At 31-years old, RN Chris Price is no spring chicken by modern standards. In sport of ultra-running however, he is just starting to come into his own after only 2 years of competition and a threat to win it all any time he toes the line in the dirt. On July 21, 2012 he will take center stage in his toughest challenge yet, the Angeles Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run. While a dark horse to win according to many, he is no longer an unknown and will challenge some of the best in the sport by navigating over 33,000 feet of elevation change over unrelenting terrain spread out over 100 miles in the San Gabriel Mountains. Whether it is climbing the steep mountains of some of Southern California's highest peaks or climbing the ranks of the still budding sport trail ultra-marathons, Chris continues his quick ascent upward.
