Created as a 30th birthday present, I picked out key events from the year 1985 and wrote a short poem based around it. I then created the assets in Illustrator and finally animated in After Effects. I wanted to create a piece that was led by the music, but also allowed for the poem to be read as it should be. • PANIC

            from Ian Faria Added 187 0 0

A visual archive of graphics and imagery used by news organizations, talk shows and fundamentalist Christian propaganda during the Satanic panic. I collected these videos over a period of months while researching the history of Satanic Ritual Abuse in the US, sequencing the clips by subject (churches, children, crosses, etc.) Transitions from one subject to another were based on graphic match cutting. The audio is comprised of over 30 anonymous eyewitness testimonies by people who have claimed to suffer from Satanic Ritual Abuse. Their interviews were featured in the videos from which many of these visuals are taken. I transcribed their stories, processed them through a text-to-speech editor, and sequenced each account by subject. This method of organization invents its own self-contradictory narrative that touches on many of these stories' common themes: rock music, kidnapping, torture, molestation, parricide, cannibalism, etc. TRIGGER WARNING: the visual and auditory content of this piece includes explicit nudity, rape and homicide.

            • Turning an old VHS camcorder into a time travel machine

              from vwestlife Added 39 1 2

The time/date clock in my 1986 Panasonic Newvicon tube VHS camcorder doesn't go past 1999, so with that in mind, I decided to fulfill a viewer request to use it making a video pretending that I was back in the 1980s. I cheated a little by capturing the camcorder's A/V outputs onto Digital8 tape, although I did edit in a short segment showing how the camcorder's own recording onto VHS-HQ tape looked in comparison. It did surprisingly well, due to its use of an edge sharpening effect to help offset VHS's low resolution (notice how it creates shadows around the time/date stamp), but the mono linear audio track did have some audible hiss.

Would you have any Grey Poupon?” or “Where’s the beef?” Ads back then also reminded us to stay hydrated, whatever your drink of choice: Miller Lite, Kool-Aid, Oceanspray, or Diet Pepsi. The Energizer Bunny and Bud Light’s party animal also make cameos in this nostalgic tribute to the commercials of the '80s.

                  • THE POLYBIUS CONSPIRACY (trailer)

                    from DB Cooper Added 206 1 0

Polybius is an arcade cabinet that was said to have briefly appeared in several arcades around the Portland, Oregon area during the early 1980s. People who claim to have played the game--or in most cases, know someone who knows someone who did--say that the machine caused a number of side effects ranging from anxiety and depression to night terrors, suicide, and even sudden death. Some believe Polybius was a product of the CIA's controversial MK-Ultra program, an experiment in mind control targeting youth. Others believe it may have had extraterrestrial origins. And though the game's mysteries are vast--theories range from men in black to imported Nazi science, to a recalled Tempest prototype--no one has ever been able to confirm the cabinet's existence. Many agree it was nothing more than a hoax, perpetrated on internet forums...but even these claims led to strange and sinister findings. Please consider helping us on our journey to finish the film: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/polybius/the-polybius-conspiracy
