    • GH2 vs GH3 Dynamic Range Test

      from Orlando Benedicto Added

GH2 vs GH3 Dynamic Range Test Testing the difference between the Panasonic GH2 and GH3 in high contrast lighting. I graded the GH3 to the GH2 as the GH3 has much more dynamic range. Overall both cameras have pros and cons. However the GH3 has more latitude for grading and has more codec options especially 1080P60P. For this test however I used similar 24P settings. GH2 - Flow Motion v2.02 Hack, 1080P 24P Vivid -2,-2,-2,-2 GH3 - 72mbit All-I 1080P 24P Vivid -4, -4, -2, -5 Lenses Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4 Panasonic 14-140mm F4-F5.8 Processed in Premiere Pro CS5.5, Fast Color Corrector and Neat Video, rendered to ProRes 4444. Field of view is different as the GH2 is a 1.86x crop versus the GH3 is a 2x crop.

Shot with the new SLR Magic 35mm T1.4 lens with hacked GH2 using Flow Motion 2.02. Settings were smooth -2 -2 0 0. My first impressions of this lens are good, and the first thing I noticed was how controlled the breathing was. The lens has a built-in gear which worked perfectly with my follow focus. The clickless aperture ring and focus rings are very smooth like the Voigtlanders. I mainly shot at T1.4 - T2.0 with a Heliopan variable ND. The iris has more than 10 blades so the bokeh is circular at any aperture. This thing also has a pure metal casing and even comes with a screw-on metal lens cap. A nice change from all the plastic equipment I have. Post-processing was minimal with just a little contrast and removal of the GH2's green cast. Music is Oh, Little Town of Bethlehem arranged by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?keywords=bethlehem&Search=Search).

Just installed the Flow Motion v2.02 patch on my GH2, and shot some trees of death through the window of my office. I was positively surprised! I have been using the Unified 88-patch earlier, which I have found very unstable on scenes like this. The recording would have frozen immediately, using the same card. But Flow Motion held up well, without missing a beat. I was worried about the quality though, because VLC on my Mac just stutters playing the MTS file, Windows Media Player on my PC can't wrap its head around the psf-structure of the 25p HBR-video using this patch, and PP CS6 shows only half resolution (no matter which source) even when set to full (where CS5 did it just fine). But when I export the movie, its fine. Minor adjustments using Fast Color Corrector in PP CS6 for color matching the clips, since they are shot at different times during the day. The only clip where I clearly see some macro blocking is the last one, which was shot with Vibrant setting. The rest are shot Smooth -2, -2, -2, -2, using the Lumix X 12-35mm lens, mostly at F6.3.

Me and my family had a wonderful 17 day vacation at the http://www.apollonia.gr on Crete. One day my oldest son (5 years) and I decided to do a corporate film about the great hotel. It was very hot that day -> 35 degree centigrade (95 degree Fahrenheit). Perfect to test the new hack (LPowell Flow Motion v2.02) I had installed on my GH2. We shot the film in 4 hours. I did the timelapse at 03:05 the next day. You can watch me at 01:16 (nice hat). Edited in 6 hours back in Germany. Visit Greece! The people are great, nice and friendly. Perfect for your holidays. :-) I will be back! PS: Almost 100 Mbps at 01:55.
