    • How to Set Up and Shoot Awesome Interviews with LED Lights

      from Doug Jensen Added

Interviews are the foundation of video and television production, and are essential to almost every type of program. For today’s high definition productions, the quality of interview lighting and the overall “look” of the setup is more critical than ever. Regardless of your budget, what type of camera you use, what kind of video you’re shooting, or how much time you have to set up, there’s really no excuse for not consistently shooting great looking interviews. But shooting great-looking interviews is NOT just about lighting. Lighting is only one piece of the puzzle. This 90-minute instructional DVD has been produced by well-known instructor, Doug Jensen, to teach anyone how to use camera placement, lighting, composition, depth-of-field, exposure, and white balance to create great-looking interviews. As you’ll learn in the DVD, lighting great-looking interviews with 100% LED lighting is not only possible, it is rapidly becoming the preferred choice for high-end shooters. This instructional DVD will show you what you need, what you do NOT need, and how to bring all the elements of shooting interviews together to achieve excellent results. Once you’ve made the switch to LED, it will be impossible to imagine ever using other types of lights for interviews ever again.

          • C300 Quick Tip: Assigning a Custom White Balance Button

            from AbelCine Added 1,882 0 0

Today's quick tip involves changing the white balance on the Canon C300 and C500. There are actually five white balance modes to choose from, selectable via the Function button at the back of the camera. The Function button also allows you to change your ISO and shutter speed, so today i'm going to show you how to dedicate one of the assignable buttons to white balance, which is great for very fast adjustments. White balance memory modes A & B are for automatic white balance via a white or gray card; they allow you to set and save two different custom white balance settings. The camera will analyze existing light sources in the scene and adjust the red, green & blue channels to achieve white, thus recorded colors will be accurate to that particular lighting situation. The C300 also allows for preset color temperatures of 3200 and 5600. The 3200K setting is based on the color temperature of tungsten lamps, while the 5600K setting is based on the exterior color temperature in sunlight. Technically, the color temperature outside can change with the location's relationship to the arc of the sun and cloud coverage, but 5600K is often considered the standard daylight temperature. In addition, the C300 & C500 also have a custom white balance setting, allowing the user to dial in a specific temperature in Kelvin. Watch my video for a step-by-step explanation of this process and check out our upcoming Canon C300/C500 workshop to learn even more! • PMW-F3 Quick Tip: 5600K CC Button

              from AbelCine Added 340 2 0

You may have wondered what the 5600K CC button on the top left hand corner of the PMW-F3′s LCD does. As its name implies, it allows you to quickly change the white balance from 3200K (tungsten) to 5600K (daylight). The important thing to remember is that the button only works this way when the camera is set to a color temperature of 3200K. With firmware version 1.31, the 5600K CC button would simply “add” 2400K to your base white balance, so 3200K + 2400K = 5600K. With firmware v1.40, you will only achieve 5600K with the 5600K CC button when you start at 3200K. The factory default for preset white on the F3 is 3200K. If Picture Profiles are turned off, the camera will always default to 3200K. In Picture Profiles, you have the ability to offset white temp, but activating this will cause the 5600K button to register a temp other than 5600K. The LCD screen can conveniently display Color Temp status, whether the 5600K button is active or whether a Picture Profile is active. To keep it simple, just remember: only use the 5600K button if your default color temp is 3200K.

A short film of Brazilian Chef Rafael Jacobi, who runs and owns a Thai restaurant in South Brazil and does catering for a big function venue as well. Shot in Porto Alegre/RS at Wok Restaurante and in Gramado/RS at Casa Branca Eventos during October 2011. I used a 7D and 5D MkII and a 50mm 1.4 and a 16-35mm 2.8 II. Edited in Premiere Pro and coloured in After Effects, both CS5. Nothing fancy with the lighting. A 1000w Fresnel bouncing on the ceiling for fill and warmer light combined with the kitchen's 5600K fluorescent lights. For the food plating on the last half, I used the same Fresnel as back/side light shot directly through a diffuser and a homemade Kino Flo using 2x fluorescent light bulbs, warmer than 5600K, mounted on a C stand. Music by Saint Germain - Soul Salsa Soul.
