          • The City Exposed: Autographs, please

from San Francisco Chronicle Added 222 4 0

A recent Tuesday at 4:48 p.m.: With a blue-tipped Sharpie at the ready, Pat Wong watched as another San Francisco 49er left the team's compound without signing any autographs. It was just a few days before today's much-anticipated playoff game against the New York Giants, which will determine this year's Super Bowl participants. The manic buzz of Wong's fellow autograph seekers was growing. But for Wong, 48, a part-time bookkeeper with lots of flexibility in his schedule, it was a day like many others. He's been driving from his San Francisco home to the team's Santa Clara headquarters three to four days a week since the early 1980s. "Everyone has their habit. People smoke ... People drink. That's not my habit. This is my habit," he said. Wong doesn't sell much of what he collects; usually he's getting stuff signed for himself or friends. On this day, hoping to catch Coach Jim Harbaugh, he got to his spot behind the steel barrier at the edge of the driveway where players come and go starting at 6 a.m. Three jackets and two football jerseys protected him from temperatures near freezing. As his competition started arriving more than eight hours later, Wong seemed comfortable to be still standing next to the red wheelie bag he brought that overflowed with photographs and other prizes to be autographed. When the players started driving their shiny muscle cars out of the large iron gate, Wong quietly pointed to a small boy holding a Niners helmet in his arms. He knew the players might have a soft spot for a child. When running back Frank Gore rolled down the window of his black SUV, Wong let everybody who pushed their way to the front get their items autographed before he passed the football star a red and white jersey to sign. Wong walked back with the faintest smile on his face and added the shirt to the growing pile in the red bag. He hadn't seen the coach. "I keep saying I won't come back. I keep coming back," he said. "I'm living the life I want." To see a multimedia production of this piece, go to sfgate.com/cityexposed. If you have ideas for the City Exposed, e-mail Mike Kepka at mkepka@sfchronicle.com. The Grab. The Throw and Grab. The Catch III. Whatever you want to call it, this single play is what many are calling one of the biggest plays in San Francisco 49ers history. After the Saints pulled ahead 32-29 with 1:37 remaining, Alex Smith drove the 49ers down to the New Orleans 14 yard line. With only nine seconds left, Smith silenced his critics in one throw, completing a touchdown pass to Vernon Davis to win the game. Here's an NFL 2K5 version of The Catch III with audio courtesy of KNBR's Ted Robinson and Eric Davis. Keep in mind the latest roster update doesn't include some of the players in the actual game, but I tried my best to mimic the actual play.
